Gouldian Finch Genetics Calculator

Choose the alleles of a male and a female and see instantly which chicks they can produce and with what probability: head colour (red, black, orange), breast colour (purple, lilac, white) and body colour (green, blue, yellow/pastel), shown separately for sons and daughters.

Genetic prediction of the offspring of a Gouldian finch pair in GouldianCal

What it calculates

For every pair it works out the probability of each colour variety among the sons (males) and daughters (females), both as phenotypes (what you see) and genotypes (what they carry, including split/carrier birds).

It takes into account that colour inheritance in the Gouldian finch is sex-linked: the hen has only one Z chromosome, so a hen can never be a carrier of those genes or be a pastel (yellow-backed dilute), for example.

How to use it

1. Set the alleles of the cock and the hen (head, breast, body, orange…). 2. Press “Show results”. 3. Read the possible chicks and their probabilities, with a picture of each variety.

If you breed your own birds, the Pro plan deduces genotypes from their parents and warns you when a real chick does not fit the genotype you saved.

More than a calculator

GouldianCal is also an online aviary manager for Gouldian finch breeders: bird register with ring numbers, pairs and groups (trios), clutches and eggs, foster pairs, candling reminders, statistics and PDF lists. The first month is free; after that it costs €2.99 a month (VAT included).

FAQ

Is the Gouldian finch calculator free?

Yes. You can use it for free without signing up, up to 5 calculations a day. The Pro plan removes the limit and lets you use your own birds.

Can I use it to predict the colour of Gouldian finch chicks?

Yes: it shows the probability of each variety among sons and daughters from the alleles of the male and the female, including carriers.

Can a female Gouldian finch be a pastel or a carrier?

No. Some genes sit on the Z chromosome and the hen has only one, so she cannot be a carrier of them or a pastel.

Is the site available in other languages?

Yes: Spanish, English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Dutch.
